Description

A mix of fresh Perga, propolis and raw spring honey all made by our bees here in the Cheshire countryside.

Perga, (also known as bee bread or Ambrosia), is a mixture of pollen, royal jelly and enzymes, stored by the bees in the combs. When the comb cell is about ¾ full, they add a drop of honey to seal it from the air. This mixture then undergoes a lactic acid fermentation which is very similar to that in probiotic yogurt and after almost 3 months becomes Perga. This bacterial activity lowers the pH to well below the threshold for pathogenic microbial growth ensuring the preservation of the product. In addition to preservation, the fermentation process of the pollen also renders its nutrients more available. Some proteins are broken down into amino acids, starches are metabolized into simple sugars, and vitamins become more bio-available.

Perga is highly recommended to people suffering from illnesses of digestive and hepatic systems. It is also useful for urinary disorders and particularly prostate issues; some doctors recommend Perga for all men over 40 years old.
Pergoney also includes Propolis and raw spring honey that in addition to adding an amazing flavour and texture also enhances the mutual health influence of each ingredient individually.

What makes Pergoney so special?

  • Pergoney is made using fresh Perga, not dried. Drying Perga destroys the naturally occurring live enzymes, and many of the vitamins and bioflavonoids.

  • Pergoney is made by our bees from pollen they collect from local flowers here in the Cheshire countryside. We harvest all our Perga from hives within a ten mile radius of Plumley Honey House. Most Perga sold in the UK is imported from Spain or China with all the associated risk of contamination.

  • Pergoney is made using Perga from a wide variety of flowers. The bees make it from pollen they collect throughout the whole of the bee keeping season, from early April through to September. This ensures that the pollen is from a wide range of trees, hedgerows, wild flowers, farmer’s crops and garden flowers.

  • Pergoney is also made using raw spring honey and propolis. We never expose any of the ingredients in Pergoney to a higher temperature than would normally occur in the hive so all the active enzymes, live yeasts, natural proteins, flavours and aromas are preserved.

Ingredients:

Cheshire honey, Perga, Propolis

Serving suggestion: A daily dose of half to one teaspoon taken daily straight out of the jar which should then last about one month.

It should not be added to hot drinks as the heat can damage some of the beneficial properties and the propolis can stick to ceramics.

Precautions:

  • Propolis has powerful natural antibiotic properties so should not be consumed while you are on a course of prescribed antibiotics. After the course is complete though, the probiotic bacteria and yeasts in Perga may help restore the gut flora.

  • While allergy to bee pollen is frequent, allergy to Perga is very rare, however you should always try a little first and check for a reaction.

  • Pergoney and all honey is not suitable for people with a severe allergy to pollen or other bee products.
  • Honey should not be given to infants under 12 months.
